MapsTiler 1.6
MapsTiler is a very handy Windows tool for converting large images for easy viewing and navigation on a pda device or handheld computer. The source can be in gif, tiff, jpg, png or now even in pdf format. The image is tiled in smaller pieces and a set of html files  is created to allow the navigation through the pieces. This is specially useful with digital maps, which offer the added benefit that can be color-reduced without losing significant detail, thus making them achieve higher compression ratios. If the set of html files is afterwards converted to a compressed file in Plucker or  iSilo format, the final file can be even smaller than the original image. Note that you need the corresponding tool to convert the html files to a compressed file viewable in a handheld. For Pocket PC users there is a viewer of Plucker documents called Vade Mecum.

I believe those who would like to carry Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) and topographic maps in the handheld, could find  this tool specially useful, turning the PDA into a simple and free GIS (Geographic Information System), but I find it useful for having street maps, road maps and metro plans on my Palm TX. Although owners of "old" devices pre OS5, might be the ones who find it more useful, due to speed and memory limitations, hopefully people with newer handhelds (both Palm and Pocket PC based) can also find this utility convenient. I find it also very useful to put maps obtained from free on-line maps providers, such as Google, ViaMichelin, LaNetro (Spain) or StreetMap.co.uk (UK). Another good starting point is StreetMap or the Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection.  The easiest way to get the source map is to take a screenshot using the capture functionality or, if the map is actually a single image, save it directly.

Those who just want to convert a pdf file to a single image file can also use this little tool to do that  (installing ghostscript as well, see below). To do that, use the "Lock to image size" option in order to get a single image and then set the image size as desired. The resulting file is an html file with the image file (jpg, png or gif) in the corresponding subfolder.

This is how the interface looks like:

To tile a  map, just follow these steps:

1.- In the source file box, select the map to transform. If the destination is empty, it will automatically be filled with the same path, but  with the extension changed to htm. If you have installed the Ghostscript library and you select a pdf file, you will be prompted for the page to extract from the file. You can also select "Screen" and capture an area of the screen.

2.- Verify the destination and change it appropriately

3.- Select the color-reduction strategy. It is specifically thought for the Palm device, but I believe it should not be a problem with other devices. There is an additional option called "Forced 16 colors" that is a way to even allow bigger compressions in maps, while still keeping them in color.

4.- Select the html template to use. Select the plucker compatible one if you are going to create a Plucker file afterwards. Plucker does not support tables and this option creates html files without tables. Unchecking this option will place the images using tables and the converted file will not be properly viewed in Plucker. Unchecking it has an added benefit with iSilo, which this way will not wrap the sub-images within an image if they go beyond the screen limits.

5.- Set the screen limits. Note that that Plucker will wrap the images if they go beyond the screen limits and iSilo will do the same when the html files have been created in Plucker compatibility mode.  So if you are experiencing this effect, you need to reduce the screen limits so that the image does not go beyond those. The scrollbar, toolbar and title bar reduce the screen limits, so unless you are going to view the images in fullscreen in your handheld, you might want to set the screen size to something less than the real screen size. The dither option applies an error diffusion algorithm so that photo-quality images look better when bein color-reduced. The downside is that the files are typically much bigger. If you just want one single big image, not tiled, then select "Lock to image size"

6.- Set the image size. This can be set either through the number of screens or directly entered in pixels.
7.- If you want the final result to be converted using iSiloX, then check the "Launch iSiloX" option and MapsTiler will generate the ixl file for iSiloX and launch iSiloX to allow you to easily convert the file.

The tool makes use of the GraphicsMagick library and optionally GhostScript for pdf files. So you need to install them before being able to run MapsTiler. The fastest way to get the Windows version is here for the GraphicsMagick files and here for the GhostScript files. Unfortunately the libraries are quite big (around 6.3MB the first one and 10.4MB the second one).
When you install GraphicsMagick, make sure you  also install  the OLE control, which is the last option in the following window, which will appear during the GraphicsMagick installation:

Finally, since it is written in VB6 it needs the runtime engine. If you do not have it, you will have to download it from Microsoft.

The resulting image has up to 3 zoom levels: the main level, where you can see the whole image; the middle level, which is a section of the main level and the lowest level, which is a piece of the image seen at the actual proportion. If the image is relatively small, only 2 zoom levels are created. When in any of the two upper zoom levels, the image will be divided into boxes. Clicking/tapping on any of the boxes will zoom the selected area. When in the lowest zoom level, you can navigate through the image by clicking on specific areas of the screen. Although the scren is actually tiled at the lowest level, no dividing lines are shown. The behaviour of the different areas is as follow:

As you can see, tapping on the surrounding areas will move the window in that direction. Tapping on the center it will go back to the main zoom level or full image view.

As a sample of what MapsTiler can do, here is a worldmap image of 7300x4208 pixels transformed into thousands of very small htm and png files that allow navigating throgh the image from within a small screen. Even though the tiled map is composed of thousands of files,  if  converted to a pdb file it is around 3MB. The original  image is in Public Domain as part of the CIA World FactBook and was obtained from the pdf version and converted to an actual image using GhostView.  Click on the image to open a window where you can navigate through the map.

For reference purpose, the worldmap in png format highly compressed by reducing it to 16 colors can be downloaded from  here. It is around 820KB. Note that if  not reduced to 16 colors, it would be around 4MB in png format.
